Supporting Youth
By Caroline Boriack
The Club Master program from Southern States rewards
livestock-show participants.
Showing steers and heifers is a family tradition for the McGills of Iva,
S.C. Following in the footsteps of their grandparents and father, Chris
and Jon Patrick McGill show Angus and Shorthorns in local, county and
state competitions through their 4-H club.
With the help of their father, Steve, the boys have won bonus awards for
their steers and heifers by using feeds from Southern States.
Its all part of the Club Master program, which rewards participants
who feed Southern States livestock feeds and enter steers, heifers, lambs,
hogs or goats on the youth show circuit. Participants can win Club Master
jackets and cash prizes of up to $300 for Champion and Reserve Champion
winning animals. Theyre also paid a 5-cent bonus for every pound
an animal gains, just for signing up and feeding Southern States feeds
exclusively.

This is a good program for youngsters who show livestock,
notes Jackie Cutter, Farm/Home and Feed Sales Representative for Southern
States. Cutter, a 30-year veteran in feed sales, works with customers
throughout South Carolina. He says Club Master enhances the co-ops
philosophy of building on the future by encouraging rural youth to excel.
From a customers point of view, Steve says the Club Master program
is just an added bonus to a feed they would use anyway. We like
the feed, and the animals do well on it, he says of Southern States
Showblend formula. The incentives are just an extra reward
when the boys achieve their goals.
Chris and Jon Patrick have shown Champion Angus Female and Champion Shorthorn
Female cattle at the state fair, as well as capturing many honors at county
and local shows.
Many of their top show calves were chosen from the familys herd.
The McGills also rely on Southern States livestock feeds for their herd
of 130 commercial and registered cattle.
The McGills buy all of their feed and many other products from two area
Southern States retailers, Anderson Service in Anderson, S.C., and Griffs
Farm & Garden in Pendleton, S.C.
