Do's and don'ts of vaccination

  • Do inject only by proper route using the correct needle.
  • Do carefully dispose of any partially empty bottles.
  • Do change needles for each animal when anaplasmosis may be a problem.
  • Do avoid contamination by using only a sterile needle for withdrawal with a multi-dose vial.
  • Do keep Epinephrine handy in case of anaphylactic shock.
  • Don't overdose; use only the dose directed.
  • Don't vaccinate meat-producing animals within 21 days of slaughter.
  • Don't mix modified live vaccines ahead of time, and don't expose this type of vaccine to direct sunlight.

Stress constantly challenges a good health program.

  • Supportive treatment with antibiotics, sulfas, microbial and electrolytes will become necessary - often to prevent secondary infections from invading a sick or weakened animal.
Flies cost farmers millions of dollars every year.
  • Flies sepal disease that reduce production. That's why summer fly control is vital. Fly control, which should start around May, is a four-part program designed to compensate for the chemical resistance that flies have build up. Control measures include (1) insecticidal ear tags, (2) dusters or backrubbers, (3) premise sprays, (4) feed-through bolus, (5) feed blocks containing oral larvacides and (6) mineral containing an oral larvacide.
Good nutrition is necessary for effective animal health.
  • No animal can be healthy if it isn't eating the right food in the right amounts.
  • Feeding the right minerals when appropriate is also important
